Today marks three months since our dossier was sent to Ethiopia. All along, Mark and I have been saying that while we don't want to wish away time, we hope that this year goes by quickly. And friends, let me tell you, so far, this year seems to be passing by fast!
Our agency gave six referrals in June so we have indeed watched our name move up the list. And others have been added to the list behind us so right now, our name is smack-dab in the middle. It feels like we're making progress. The other good news from our agency is that they have hired an additional staff person in Ethiopia. Before, one person was coordinating everything: adoptions, sponsorships, women's training and family support. Now, one person is working solely on adoptions and the other is working on supporting families and women in their Ethiopia programs. While we continue to anticipate that it will be December or January before we'll receive our referral, it's great to think about how this program has grown and the increased number of families that are being helped in Ethiopia.
This past month, we also began sponsoring a little girl through our agency. We wanted to do something now and we're drawn to helping children. I still have moments where I struggle with the thought of taking a child out of his/her birth country and this feels like something we can do to help keep a family together. I never want to forget that our gain is someone else's loss ... a loss for our child and his/her birth family. And we are both committed to helping our child stay connected to Ethiopia. We've also learned that sometimes it is just impossible to keep a family together. But we always want to remember our child's first family.
On a lighter note, two more families from the Lafayette Ethiopia adoption group will be traveling this month to bring home their sons -- yay! And another family came home with their two sons about 10 days ago. We're having a picnic at the end of August and we can't wait to meet all of the children! And we continue to watch the blog of another family for news regarding the court date for their daughter. It's been an exciting summer!
This past weekend, Mark and I found ourselves wandering through the infant section at Penney's. They were having some really good sales! So far, we have done a good job of resisting purchasing things but this was just too good to pass up because it fits 'us' so perfectly. I think you will agree:
